A standard paling fence is either 5'4" or 6'4" in height. Of course, the height can be customised to suit different needs, such as blocking out traffic noise, or even a neighbouring primary school. Click here to see an example of a 12 foot fence built in Hawthorn.
Depending on fence height and ground condition, posts are set no less than 600mm deep in the ground using earth and a cement stabilized mix. Upon request, concrete can be used, however it is not usually required.
In order to allow for timber shrinkage, bottom palings are nailed with a 45mm gap - which ensures the top paling overlaps by at least 25mm.
